Dear French Story Listeners,
A different kind of French lesson
What if the best thing you could do for your French today was simply… listen to a beautiful story?
No vocabulary lists. No grammar drills. Just a tale that travels from ancient Japan straight to your ears in French.
This week’s story is Dame Saule, and I think it might stay with you.
A word you’ll want to know 🌿
Before you press play, here’s a small gift.
Un saule is a willow tree, elegant, graceful, with long branches that seem to sway and breathe.
You may have heard of un saule pleureur, a weeping willow. Pleureur comes from the verb pleurer, to cry, to weep. The French gave this tree its name because of those drooping branches that fall like tears.

Saule Pleureur, Claude Monet
In our story, the type of willow is never specified. And I find that rather lovely. Your imagination is invited.
The story 🎥
A loyal samurai is given an urgent mission by the emperor: travel across Japan and deliver a letter to a general in Kyoto.
Nothing will stop him, not exhaustion, not hunger, not the forces of nature.
But then he meets Dame Saule.
What unfolds is a love story as quiet and inevitable as a tree growing toward light. I’ll leave the rest for you to discover.

Your gentle invitation ✍️
After listening, try a small narration, out loud or written, whichever feels natural.
Simply notice: what touched you in the story? What moved you?
Here are a few French phrases to start you off:
- Ce qui m’a touchĂ©(e), c’est… — What touched me is…
- Ce qui m’a Ă©mu(e), c’est… — What moved me is…
- J’ai aimĂ© le moment où… — I loved the moment when…
Even one sentence is wonderful. You’re not being graded.
You’re just having a quiet conversation with the story, and with your French.
Ă€ bientĂ´t,
Alice đź’•
