To our circle of French Story Listeners,
I’ve been reading a book this week called How to Take Smart Notes by Sönke Ahrens, and one line stopped me mid-page.
He writes that we tend to think we understand what we read — until we try to put it into our own words.
The moment we do, something shifts. We not only discover how well we’ve truly understood, but we actually deepen that understanding in the very act of expressing it.
“We tend to think we understand what we read – until we try to rewrite it in our own words. By doing this, we not only get a better sense of our ability to understand, but also increase our ability to clearly and concisely express our understanding – which in return helps to grasp ideas more quickly.”
Sound familiar?
This is exactly what narration does, and why it sits at the heart of what we do together here.
Whether you retell a French story out loud, jot a few lines in a message, or sketch a scene that stayed with you, you are not just practising French.
You are building a living relationship with the language. You are making it yours.
Charlotte Mason knew this. So did every great language teacher who ever trusted a student with a story and simply said: now, tell me what you heard.
This week’s invitation 🌿
Choose a story you love from your membership. Then, in whatever way feels right to you:
- 🎙️ Record yourself retelling it — even just a minute or two
- ✍️ Write a short message about what stayed with you
- 📷 Share a picture that the story brings to mind
Then come and share it with us on Telegram: French Story Listeners community
There is no right or wrong way to do this.
The only thing that matters is showing up — pressing record, picking up your pen, sending that message.
That small act is where real progress lives.
And when you’re there, take a moment to read what others have shared. Leave a kind word. Ask a question.
Telegram is our place to exchange freely, and it grows warmer every time one of you steps in.
You’ve got this. 💕
