Where we are in the story
In chapter 1, set in Montmartre in 1980, Bruno narrowly escapes being banned from magic by the council and chooses magic over love — the painful rule all magicians must follow.
His great-great-aunt, the enchantress Astrid (Tante Dubois), invites him to spend the summer with her in Brittany, training in secret.
In chapter 2, the school year winds down. Bruno keeps his distance from Mia to avoid the temptation of falling for her, successfully passes his exams, and learns from his father that he will spend the summer helping his aunt, who needs him for un boulot.
Bruno has made his choice: magic over love, duty over Mia. But is that choice really as settled as it seems?
Come find out what happens next!
A word on “boulot“
“Boulot” is everyday French slang for job or work — casual, a little gritty, the kind of word you’d use with friends rather than in a formal letter.
Its roots trace back to the word bouleau (birch wood), once used by wood-carvers to describe tough, tedious labor. Working the wood was hard going, and the word eventually broadened to mean work in general.
You’ll often hear it in the classic French expression: “mĂ©tro, boulot, dodo” — literally “subway, work, sleep” — a phrase that captures the exhausting, repetitive grind of everyday city life.
It rhymes playfully in French, which is part of why it’s stuck around as such a popular saying since the 1950s!
🇫🇷 A weekend with me, in real life
And a gentle reminder about our weekend in Pau this November!
This is a rare chance to have an authentic, unique French experience with me, in real life, not just on screen.
We know it falls over Thanksgiving for our American members, so if that’s not possible for you this year, we completely understand!
But if you’re not celebrating Thanksgiving, we’d love for you to join us!
There are only 4 spots available.
