Dear French Story Listeners,
I’ve been a little quiet lately, and I’ve missed you.
After more than a month away from YouTube, My Dear Man (behind the stage) & I are back!
Not with a story this time, but with something I felt called to share.
A reflection that grew out of watching our members, many of them in their 50s, 60s, and beyond, quietly flourishing in French.
What’s their secret? They stopped believing the lie.
“I’m too old. My memory just isn’t what it used to be.”
Sound familiar? It did to me too.
But here’s what I’ve come to understand: your memory is not the problem. The approach is.
Your brain doesn’t hold onto vocabulary lists, and that’s completely normal!
That’s human. Your braint holds onto stories. Always. That’s how it was designed.
This is exactly what we do here. No grammar drills. No pressure. No memorisation.
Just living stories that your mind can sink into, naturally and gently.
In this week’s video, we explore:
- Why a “poor memory” might actually be your greatest asset
- What “living ideas” are and why they change everything
- Three gentle shifts to help you start today
And I end with a simple challenge: choose a story, listen to it, retell it in your own words.
That’s it.

If it speaks to you, I’d love for you to leave a comment, or share it with a friend or family member who keeps telling themselves they’re too old to learn.
They’re not.
And this video might just be what they need to hear.
You’ve got this. You really do.
Alice 💕
P.S. If you’d like to go deeper — to listen to stories every week, retell them, and receive gentle feedback in a community that sees you as a whole person — our membership might be just the right next step. We treat you as a person, not a data point. Your mind craves living ideas, not dead facts. Come and join us: aliceayel.com/membership/join
