Dear French Story Listeners,
Think about the last time you told someone about a movie you loved.
You didn’t recite it word for word. You told it, in your own way, and in doing so, you understood it a little more deeply. You made it yours.
That, it turns out, is exactly how we learn French too.
In her book Know and Tell, Charlotte Mason scholar Karen Glass writes about this beautifully:
“Just as our narrative interactions with our family, friends, and neighbors increase our intimacy with them and strengthen our shared understanding, the process of narration in education deepens our understanding of the material we read and allows us to retain it as our own. Our learning becomes a matter of not merely acquiring information, but of relating what we are learning to what we already know, so that our understanding grows sharper and clearer, and we remember things better.”
Narration isn’t a school exercise, it’s a relationship.
And just like with people, the more you tell a story back, the closer you get to it.
This is why narration is one of the gentlest, most effective tools we have for acquiring French.
No drills, no memorization — just watching, listening, and then telling it back in your own words.
This week’s free story on YouTube is a perfect one to practice with: “Une crêpe délicieuse,” a repetitive French tale in the spirit of the Gingerbread Man (a runaway crêpe, if you can believe it 🥞).
Its repetition makes it an ideal first narration story, because the pattern carries you.

Here’s how to try it, no pressure at all:
- Watch and listen with the simple intent to understand — not to catch every word.
- Narrate it back — either in French or in your own language — in your own words, to yourself, a pet, a grandchild, whoever’s around.
That’s it. Let the crêpe do the running; you just tell the tale.
